This readme.txt file is a guide to the the OpenAFS software distributions that are located in the subdirectories. All numbered directories contain source tarballs and binaries for the numbered release. The numbering convention is ... Release series are described by the major and minor values. By current convention, releases with even minor values are always considered production quality whereas releases with odd minor values may contain experimental code. In general, when selecting a build on all platforms other than Microsoft Windows, you should select the highest numbered release with an even minor value. For Windows, the odd/even convention does not apply. Please see the http://www.openafs.org/windows.html page for advice on which release is recommended for general use. The 'candidate' directory contains production quality release candidates that require validation that they are in fact ready for general consumption. The 'current' and 'unstable' symlinks should point to the most recent odd or even minor valued release. However, this volume is not always updated so they may be out of date. The 'snapshot' directory contains one week's worth of tarballs containing the contents of the openafs repository.
